Modern synthetic brushes are excellent and have the advantage of being less expensive than natural hair. Traditionalists will tell you that no synthetic fiber can beat a Kolinsky sable, which is considered the ultimate of soft hairs because of its flexibility and strength, which give an artist great control. Natural Kolinsky red sable hairs are unsurpassed for absorbency and strength. They are the standard by which the industry judges all brushes (including synthetic).

But with today's technology for producing a variety of fibers at a reasonable cost, synthetic brushes, which are general best suited for acrylic paints, have become the popular choice for most decorative painters.  Dynasty Brush Company is the industry's leader in proprietary synthetic blends and have they have developed brushes that can be used across all paint mediums.

Let's compare the differences between natural versus synthetic hair brushes:

Natural Hair Brushes Synthetic Hair Brushes
  • Superior ability to hold paint generously
  • Unable to hold as much paint as natural hair brushes
  • Brushes vary from soft to coarse
  • Synthetic brushes are known for durability
  • Soft hairs include sable, goat, squirrel, badger, fitch and weasel/Kolinsky.
  • Many synthetics have more body and can accommodate a wide range of paint viscosities
  • Coarse or stiffer hairs include horse, ox and hog bristle
  • Synthetic brushes can be used with all mediums
  • Suitable for more fluid media like watercolor
  • Single-blend synthetics typically don't have the fine taper and point of natural hair brushes
  • Typically more expensive
  • Generally less expensive than natural hair brushes
  • Usually quite springy and resilient.
  • Resistance to abuse
  • Natural hairs (especially Kolinsky Sable) have a sharp taper and fine point
  • Easier to clean with solvents as they are synthetic.
  • Best for use with watercolor and oil-base products
  • In general, work best with acrylics.  However, new blended synthetics cross multiple paint mediums

If you're at all easily offended about or ideologically opposed to the sources of natural hair, then synthetic brushes are the way to go for you.  To learn more about the different brush hairs that brushes are made with, please follow this link "Brush Usage".
